Curtis Owens was a titan of operational excellence and civic leadership. A proud US Army veteran (Medical Administrative Officer), he applied military precision to a distinguished career that helped shape the modern healthcare landscape.
A Philadelphia native and U.S. Army First Lieutenant, he revolutionized the healthcare industry by transforming a grassroots incubator into a $167 million enterprise—the largest minority-owned corporation in Pennsylvania history. His model served as the national template for HMOs across the United States. In Los Angeles, Curtis continued his trailblazing work as CEO of UHP Healthcare, managing a $227 million network and earning praise from leaders like Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr. for his integrity. His lifetime of service was validated by the Congressional Medal of Merit and his induction into the Central State University Hall of Fame.
Beyond business, Curtis was a civic catalyst. He served as a Senior Advisor to Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, opened South Central LA’s first Construction Apprenticeship School to break union segregation, and discovered legendary songwriter Linda Creed.
To his son, Derek Owens, Curtis was a mentor in the "matrix of the American experience." Known for her methodical precision and sharp business acumen, Edna was a fierce advocate for social progress, constantly pushing for the advancement and proper representation of Black culture within the American experience. Her influence was so vital to the Motown story that her character was featured in the Broadway hit, Motown: The Musical.
